Paphos: The Cultural Hub of Cyprus

Paphos: The Cultural Hub of Cyprus

During ancient times, the city of Paphos was the island’s capital for more than six hundred years. The city was also home to the most thriving city-kingdoms of that time. Its glory has not faded, as Paphos remains the cultural hub of Cyprus, welcoming tourists from all corners of the world, who seek to explore the city’s attractions, timeless villages and stunning coastline. Although the majority prefer travelling during the summer, I love winter Paphos. In my opinion, Paphos is a city that is best explored during the winter when its natural beauty is highlighted and traditional villages welcome you with open arms.

Old Harbour

The city’s Old Harbour is an all-year-round attraction that mustn’t be missed. The picturesque little port is home to one of the most impressive medieval forts on the island, which stands tall and proud still exuding its past glory. Strolling through the harbour you will see tiny kaikia (fishing boats) anchored by the harbour, busy locals going about their daily routine, vibrant cafes and charismatic traditional tavernas. The entire setting creates a charming atmosphere.

Nature Buffs

Paphos is a true oasis when it comes to unmanned and natural settings. The city boasts with unspoilt landscapes, stunning bays, interesting and serene trails that summon all its visitors to explore. Akamas Peninsula is amongst the most popular. Akamas is a vast nature reserve where you will discover the island’s rare flora and fauna as you walk through its walking trails. The Diarazou River and Paphos Forest are equally enchanting areas to connect with nature. For those travelling during the summer must visit Lara Beach, where sea turtles nest their eggs.

Coumandaria Wine

Coumandaria Wine is one of the most renowned wines locally produced on the island. The sweet red wine was first produced on the island in the 12th century by the Knights of St. John. Today there are fourteen Coumandarie Villages that specialise in making the wine. A great way to explore the countryside of Paphos is by taking a tour through these timeless villages and explores their cobbled-stoned alleys. You will be amazed by the local’s warm nature and hospitality as well as the amazing Cypriot architecture still preserved in the villages.

Goddess of Beauty and Love

The Aphrodite Rock is one of the top attractions found on the island. as legend has it the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite emerged from the foam of the waves near the rock. She then settled in Cyprus where she lived her life and fell in love with Adonis. Aphrodite used to bathe in the Akamas Peninsula, in a little spring, now known as the Baths of Aphrodite. According to the locals who ever sips or touches the sacred waters of the spring is granted eternal beauty.

Paphos is a magical destination that puts a spell on all its visitors. it is a city where culture was born, a city with a glorious past, a city that welcomes all of you to unravel.
