Must-Visit in Mykonos island, Greece
Mykonos is known as the cosmopolitan hub of Greece, boasting with attractions, like its stunning beaches, charming villages and vibrant nightlife, plethora of chapels and interesting museums. Some of the most impressive sights every visitor must see are described beneath. All that remains to be said is enjoy every single moment you spend on this whitewashed Cycladic Island as it is a magical experience!
Ano Mera Village
Ano Mera Village lies in the centre of the island and is the most populated region of Mykonos. The charismatic settlement is built around its most popular landmark, the monastery of Panagia Tourliani. The imposing monastery was built in the 16th century using authentic Cycladic-style architecture. Later on in 1767 it was reconstructed, adding to its originality and style.
Opposite Ano Mera Village, standing on a hilltop stands the Paleokastro Monastery, where you will find the ruins and remains of the island’s Byzantine Castle and the ancient tombs dating as far back as the Geometric era in Greece.
The Ancient Settlement of Ftelia and Panormos
Lying in the middle of Panormos and Ftelia beaches, excavations have revealed a seven-thousand year old settlement. Archaeologists found the ruins of important public buildings and unique Neolithic art made by goldsmiths of that time. The art found includes terracotta figurines, pottery, obsidian blades and knives, a gold pendant and a fired clay-boat model. Visiting the site is like taking a journey back in time, where you will be amazed at all the elaborate art and structures you will see of past civilisations on the island.
Little Venice decorates the west part of Mykonos Town, also known as Chora. This is the region where the town meets the infinite blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Little Venice is famed for its romantic atmosphere that most succumb to immediately and fall in love with its quaint beauty. The two-storey buildings that make up Little Venice were constructed literally on the edge of the sea, with balconies hanging over the Aegean. According to locals, during the 16th and 17th centuries pirates were common throughout the Aegean. Thus, locals explain that the ragged buildings were purposely constructed this way by the pirate-owners of the homes to facilitate them when loading and unloading their treasures!
The impressive Archaeological Museum of Mykonos was constructed in 1902 and displays a diversity of artefacts dating back to antiquity till the end of the Hellenistic Period in the 1st century BC. The collection includes vases, tomb statues, urns made of steel, jewellery, clay figurines, amphorae, and tiny archaic artefacts.
