Must-See in Paphos
Must-See in Paphos
In antiquity, Paphos was known as the thriving cultural and financial hub of the Mediterranean. Back then, the city used to be the capital of the island of Cyprus. Paphos is the gem of the island in more ways than one, as the city has some of the richest archaeological regions originating to the Roman Empire, it boasts of special attractions and famed landmarks, its natural landscapes are breathtaking, its shores and bays are stunning and its quaint villages are amazing! Paphos is an inspiring city that should be explored step by step!
The Mosaics of Paphos
Located near the picturesque harbour of Paphos you will find some of the most well-preserved mosaics in the world! The mosaics date back to the 3rd-5th centuries AD and can be admired at the Paphos Archaeological Park. Paphos Archaeological Park is a site where the city has gathered all the major historic findings of the town and its surrounding area in an attempt to promote their historic treasures and preserve them.
The mosaics are found in impressive Roman Palaces. The most admired are those found in the House of Dionysos, Orpheus, Aion and Theseus-which all show illustrations from Greek mythology and early Christianity. They were found accidently by a farmer while he was ploughing his field! They are made out of tiny marble-cubes and stone which is called tesserae.
Saranta Kolones Castle
The ruins of Saranta Kolones lie on the northern side of Paphos Harbour. The palace was named Saranta Kolones (forty Columns) because it is presumed it was initially built, by the Lusignans in the 13th century, on a forty-column granite base where prior stood a Byzantine castle.
Archaeological findings have proven that the original Byzantine castle was constructed as far back as the 7th century, and the Lusignans renovated, extended and remodelled it to create the Saranta Kolones Castle.
Today, although most of the palace is in ruins, it is incredibly popular with tourists who explore the dungeons and tower that are still intact.
