The church began construction in the 14th century and was completed in the 7th century. Each of the churches comprising Panagia Paraportiani represents a different era of its past. The four churches found on the ground floor combine features of Vernacular, Traditional and Western style architecture while the fifth lies above forming a domed roof. Panagia Paraportiani is visited by thousands of tourists every year, some to pay respect but others simply to take pictures of the magnificent views of the sunset and Aegean!
Petros the Pelican
Petros the Pelican is an old celebrity of Mykonos! Petros has been the island’s official mascot since it was found by a fisherman after a devastating storm in 1954. The bird was nursed back to life and chose to remain on the island, where he became an unorthodox local resident till he died. After his death, the locals found a replacement, which till this day roams the cobble-like streets of Mykonos attracting both locals and tourists by it charismatic and charming nature!
