Achilleion Palace was inspired by the Greek hero Achilles?  Empress of Austria Elisabeth of Bavaria (Sissy), who built the summer palace in 1890, was fascinated by Corfu and made it her personal haven. Sissy’s obsession with beauty is evident when visiting the palace and its gardens, which are covered with sculptures.
