#1. Valley of the Butterflies
The Valley of the Butterflies is an impressive spot on the island whereby tourists flock to in order to watch the miracles of nature hands on! Thousands of butterflies overflow the blossoming valley to reproduce every summer. The sight of butterflies literally conquering the land is fascinating to say the least!
#2. The Ancient City of Ialysos
Ialysos is one out of the three in total, ancient historic city kingdoms found on the island of Rhodes. The ancient city is a source of inspiration for all history lovers as the ruins originate back to the 3rd century BC.
#3. Seven Springs
A natural biotope covered in scented pine trees, wooden bridges and flowing streams make up the fabulous Seven Springs of Rhodes! Those up for an adventure can trek through the labyrinth pathways in quest of the Seven Springs! Others looking for an adrenaline rush may venture through the 186 metre-long thrilling gorge and meet the island’s rare wildlife and plants. Beware-the gorge is quite dark! #4. Rhodes Marine Aquarium
The island’s Hydro-biological Station was founded in 1937 and since the mid 1960s it has also run as a Marine-Aquarium Museum as well as a research hub. In actuality, the impressive centre is part of the National Centre of Marine Research which purpose is to preserve s well as educate the public about the Mediterranean’s sea life and creatures. Thousands of tourists, fascinated by the island’s marine life, visit the centre to admire a vast variety of sea species including sea turtles, sharks, whales and monk seals! It’s a fun, educational and unique insight to all that the Mediterranean has to offer!
The Byzantine monastery of Tsampika stands on a hilltop overlooking the entire island and surrounding turquoise-blue waters. The monastery is a Byzantine church dedicated to Our Lady. Besides the breathtaking views from the peak of the hill and the impressive structure of the church, the religious landmark is extra special as it is intertwined with myths. Childless women from all over the Christian world travel to Rhodes just to step foot in the miracle-working monastery. As legend has it, barren women need to climb to the hilltop barefoot and pray to the Virgin Mary in order to be blessed with children. Guess what? The vast amount of Tsampika and Tsampikas running around Rhodes makes it impossible not to believe the legend!
#6. Lindos’ Acropolis
Rhodes has a rich cultural and historical heritage, and one of its main and most impressive archaeological sites is Lindos. The entire experience is intensified by the fact that Lindos is located in the heart of Rhodes’ blossoming natural landscapes and scenery. Lindos’ Acropolis lies on the peak of a hill overlooking the infinite blue beyond. The medieval 14th century walls you will come across were built by the Crusaders above the ruins of older Byzantine fortifications. The Acropolis fascinates the masses with its ancient, rugged yet majestic and dominating presence.
#7. Rhodes’ Old Town
Rhodes’ medieval town is the oldest inhabited town of its kind throughout Europe! Most prefer to enter the medieval city through the Eleftheria Gate, which leads you directly to Simi Square that displays the 3rd century Temple of Venus! The Old Town of Rhodes invites all its visitors to lose themselves through its labyrinth-like alleyways, which really is a blessing in disguise! #8. Ancient Kamiros
The third and last ancient site of the island is Kamiros, which in the 5th century linked Lindos and Ialyssos. The three city kingdoms made up the thriving and triumphant Rhodian State. The ancient city thrived in the hands of the Dorians, but based on the ruins of an ancient Mycenaean cemetery found nearby, the first to have settled in the city were the Achaeans. The ancient city was once a prosperous agricultural hub where its people cultivated the rich land and produced figs, oil and wine. During the 6th century, Kamiros created and cut its own coins. How impressive is that?
#9. Prophet Elias
Prophet Elias is a rich pine-covered forest was named after the quaint Monastery of Prophet Elias, which stands on the slopes of a mountain at an altitude of more than 700 metres! Visitors love the idea of spending a day in the heart of Rhodes’ nature, amidst rare blossoming flowers and plants! What more, the breathtaking views from up above are outstanding to say the least!
#10. Monolithos Castle
The medieval castle stands proudly on a massive projected rock within Monolithos Village, surrounded by scented pines. The fortress was named Monolithos (lonely rock) due to the fact it stands on the outcrop of a remote rock. A ten-minute walk that will lead you through scented wild herbs along the sea is in order to reach the majestic-looking medieval fortress.
